Bye Bye Blackboard - Cloud over Blackboard

This article was taken from the blog Science of the Invisible written by Dr. Alan CannTuesday, September 22, 2009

Cloud over Blackboard I spent most of yesterday wrangling Blackboard in preparation for the start of term next week. Along the way, I started to wonder if I could just walk away from Blackboard (maybe the university would give me the money I'd save them as salary)? And I think the answer is yes (to the first question, but probably not the second).

Each student would get a WordPress.com blog (because I don't see the sense of abandoning a VLE to encumber yourself with the admin load of administering WordPressMU or any other centralized installation - let's put it in the cloud). This would serve as a place to submit assessments and receive feedback. Students could choose whether their blogfolio was public or only visible to instructors. The joy of RSS-everywhere in Wordpress would make large numbers of students a joy to administer.

Blackboard quizzes and other forms of data submission (usernames, etc) would be dealt with via Google forms on the Instructor's own course blog. Course materials would be published sequentially on the Instructor's course blog and support given via Twitter, Screenr.com, YouTube and Skype.

Let's do it (you know you want to).

Taking the basic premise of a dictionary, Wordnik supplements each entry with Web 2.0's tastiest treats--relevant Flickr images, Twitter search matches, user-contributed tags and comments--and then invites users to add their own words, too." A great explanation of how social media works.
Animoto-making a movie about our trip to NMSU in Marquette to see Joshua. It just can't be as easy as it seems, can it? Wow! Yes, it can. This is a great little tool for sharing some pictures with music. I like it! I made one of our trip to SMSU when we took Julie to school. I can't wait for her to see it!

I will definitely use this in my classes! It is incredibly easy.

This is supposed to be a learning blog, but it is so hard to always cite new things I'm learning when in reality I'm often reaquainting myself with tools I was shown a few years ago but didn't have the opportunity to explore. Tonight I was looking at YFrog and tag clouds (tagcloud.com and tagcrowd.com). I was also trying to find free podcasting and will explore several sites such as ClickCaster and Gabcast later this week.
Today was spent getting my Research & Study Skills summer course on Blackboard today in addition to planning for our summer day classes. Tomorrow I'll be at the office during the day, and doing testing and registration for the summer evening program at night. It's going to be a long day.
I still need to fix my "how to" video before I send it out to the teachers. My list of "to do's" is always growing and never shrinking. Do I hate stress or thrive on it?
I'm getting nervous again about that "tech" Academy class I'm supposed to be teaching in August. Will I know enough to fill up a 3 1/2 hour class by then? How will I structure it? How about a 20 minute break???!!! What will they be hoping for? What can I experiment with in my Research class that I can demonstrate in the "Academy?" I think it's time to start outlining what I want to do. But, I'll worry about that another day. Thanks, Scarlett!

Tonight I downloaded Jing, a free service that allows you to instantly share images and video, from your desktop to anywhere. It is much like using print screen but with editing tools. After printing a variety of screen shots and incorporating directions on each screen, I exported the pictures into Windows Movie Maker. I added a title slide at the beginning, a credit slide at the end, and an exerpt from Beethovan's 3rd to play in the background. All and all, I think I was successful. The only negative was that each screen was small enough to cause eye problems and frustration from the small print. If I don't figure out how to enlargen the print, the next time I will have to do a narration in the background instead of small dialogue boxes and music.

Beginning the Blog

I am so incredibly excited about all the new information I am gathering about educational technology from so many people around the world that I've decided to start keeping better track of it all on this blog.  I am indebted to people like Larry Simons, Mark Mankowski and others for sharing their knowledge with me and for urging me on to pursue and share a passion for more current and creative teaching with technology. By Mark putting in an "encouraging word" to MATC's Educational Research and Dissemination (ER&D) who then sent me to Elliot Masie's Learning Roundtable in Chicago over spring break, I was able to meet others involved in e-learning. And now, by staying in touch with them through Twitter, I am being educated every day about how they and others globally are using new technologies to break down classroom walls and truly make the world their classrooms.  Students and educators are easily and inexpensively able to learn cooperatively and collaboratively with others all around the world who share similar interests.  It is an exciting time for me to be both teaching and learning, and I hope that through this blog I can share that excitement.
